South
Africans are well ahead of the global average in experimenting with phone, text
and e-mail sex, indulging in one night stands and sleeping with their best
friends' partners, according to the 2003 Durex Global Sex Survey.
The online survey, which was released on Tuesday, polled nearly 4,000 South
Africans on their sexual habits.
The survey found 67% of South
Africans were happy with their sex lives, compared with the global average of
73%.
The most blissfully happy were lovers in the Far East, with
Thailand (92%), Vietnam (90%) and China (83%)
topping the chart.
Finland (59%) and the Russian Federation (59%) were the least happy.
Worldwide sexually active adults were having sex on average 127
times a year. South Africans were not getting lucky as often, having sex an
average 123 times a year.
But pity the Singaporeans and
Malaysians, who score least often, 96 and 100 times per year respectively.
Although Russians were the least happy about their sex lives,
they were in the top three for frequency of sex, averaging 150 days a year.
Hungary, with an average 152 and Bulgaria with 151 a year, topped
the sexual encounters list.
South Africans may not be having as
much sex as East Europeans, but they scored high on one-night stands.
61% percent of South African respondents had had a one night stand.
Only Denmark (65%), Finland (68%) and Norway (70%) were more prepared to hop
into bed for a once-off experience.
South Africans were also
quite willing to combine sex and technology - 41% admitted to having had phone,
cellphone text or e-mail sex.
The United States (54%), United
Kingdom (52%) and Canada (50%) were at the forefront of virtual sex.
South Africans should be worried about letting their best friends near their
partners - 15% of respondents admitted to having slept with their best friend's
partners, which is higher than the global average of 10%.
On the
other hand they need not worry about their partners getting up to sexual
mischief at work.
Only 5% of respondents had slept with their bosses.
South
Africans fake orgasms more than the global average.
33% of local respondents confessed to faking it while globally 26% were
fakers.
But faked orgasms are most likely to happen down under, with 47% of
Australians and 46% of New Zealanders admitting to it.
Lubricants
were the favourite sex enhancer in South Africa, while globally respondents
preferred enhanced condoms and pornographic magazines or movies.
These items did however score well locally.
Local respondents
also preferred vibrators and sex toys to sexy underwear.
The opposite was true of global respondents.
Rugby player Bob
Skinstad and 5FM deejay Nicole Fox were voted South Africa's sexiest.
English footballer David Beckham topped the league as the world's sexiest man
and actress Jennifer Lopez was the sexiest woman.
The survey
showed that Americans were regarded as one of the sexiest nationalities of all,
second only to Brazilians.
Globally, more than 150,000 people
from 34 countries took part in the survey.
